I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been shortlisted for the 2025 Portuguese Art Prize @sovereignportugueseartprize Here is my piece and a brief reflection on it. I hope you enjoy it. — “I hope my work gives people a chance to pause and contemplate whatever feelings arise. In our digital era, that ability is being lost, yet art still offers us the rare luxury of disconnecting and reflecting on ourselves.” — This piece is inspired by Cape Verdean poetry, spirituality, and the state of the world today. Growing up at the very start of the transition from offline to online life, I witnessed how our society and our state of mind have changed. The Narrating-self, experience self & the Algorithm We as individuals are divided between these two voices, the narrating-self and the experience-self. A good analogy between these two voices is our perception of suffering and pain, craving and hunger. (Neuro-marketers have evolved and learned to manipulate our senses.) For the longest time, these two voices have been coexisting, shaping what we consider the ‘I’. Solo show coming soon.
Today, June 10th, we celebrate Portugal Day, Camões Day, and Portuguese Communities Day. Community, it’s an important word, but what does it mean exactly ? 30 years ago, 30 years ago, Alcindo was brutally beaten and left in a coma by a community that would stop at nothing to exclude him and others like him from their community, even resorting to murder. In my quest trying to feel others’ pain, I collaborated with @manuelino.jpg , @mrikasefa , and @nuno.marques.pinto to create this installation. My initial goal was to understand what memories I would try to hold dear to my heart after I lost my community and conscience. Here are some clips I selected. This piece was exhibited at @maatmuseum back in 2022 as part of a group art show, “Interferencias”. I would like to express my gratitude to @britoguterres for inviting me and for presenting me with this opportunity. Studio work. “Technological data storage strips all life from what has been. It is without time. Thus, a total present pre-vails today. It is abolishing the irretrievable moment. Time without moments is merely additive and no longer situative. As the temporality of the click, it lacks decision and resolve. The blink of an eye is yielding to pointing-and-clicking.” Byung-Chul Han - Eros Agony I find this quote to be so gracefully written. We shouldn’t be consuming art online. Paintings, poetry, movies should make us pause and reflect. And being still is the opposite of being efficient, and no social media don’t want you to be reflective; online engagement is against reflectiveness. . #fidelevora #btsfanart #studiare
